Subscriber privacy: a practical checklist

Think about the screen, the inbox, and the shared device.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Treat privacy as several small decisions rather than a promise of anonymity. Review what you display publicly and where account activity might appear in your everyday setup.

Start with what you control

Review your public-facing username, avatar, and any profile text. Avoid reusing details that unnecessarily connect separate parts of your life. That does not make an account anonymous; it simply reduces accidental disclosure through the information you choose to publish.

Consider your environment too. A shared tablet, an unlocked laptop, or a notification preview can reveal activity even when your public profile is minimal. Use your own account on shared devices and understand whether passwords are being saved or synchronized.

Review messages and downloads

Decide whether notification previews belong on a lock screen. Check where downloaded files go and whether that folder is backed up to a shared account. A private-looking device can still sync content to somewhere other people can see.

Be careful about the personal details you share in conversation. A creator does not need your workplace, home address, or private social accounts simply because you enjoy their content. Share deliberately and respect the same boundary in return.

Know the limits of a checklist

Privacy settings cannot guarantee that nobody will ever connect an account to you. Services and payment providers may process identifying information, and requirements vary. Read the current privacy information for the services you use rather than relying on a blanket claim of anonymity.

If a particular disclosure would create serious consequences, reconsider the activity or device arrangement before proceeding. For routine account protection, use our security guide. Privacy is also about choosing what not to put into a conversation, a profile, or a shared folder.

Put it into practice

  1. Review public profile details.
  2. Check notifications and shared-device syncing.
  3. Do not assume anonymity.
